SUMMARY:Speaker Series - Louis Bromfield with John Anderson
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us at the Freer Home as we welcome John Anderson who will give a first-person portrayal of Louis Bromfield. \nLiterature comes to life in the performances and scholarship of John Dennis Anderson\, an accomplished oral interpreter who presents biographical performances of America’s greatest authors. As a Professor Emeritus at Emerson College\, Anderson has taught and continues to publish in the academic field of performance studies and serves as a consultant on living history performance. Since 1994\, Anderson has been developing and presenting living history (or Chautauqua) performances as the authors Henry James\, William Faulkner\, Robert Frost\, Washington Irving\, Ernest Hemingway\, Louis Bromfield\, Henry Beston\, and Lynn Riggs. He has performed in over a dozen states\, in venues from the Boston Athenaeum to the Seattle Public Library. No stranger to Ashland\, Anderson has performed several of these characters at the annual Ashland Chautauqua event at the Myers Memorial Band Shell.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series - Preserving Your Family History with Tammy Pelton
DESCRIPTION:Tammy Sloan Pelton\, a member and past President of the Ashland County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society\, is an enthusiastic genealogist that enjoys teaching others how to get started preserving your family heritage. She also has some great tips on how to preserve those family heirlooms. \nTammy was born and raised in Ashland\, Ohio. She and husband Kevin raised their three daughters in the northern part of Ashland County in the Mapleton School District where she served on many committees and boards\, including six years with the Mapleton School Board. \nIn 2017\, her interest in genealogy began. Her passion is creating special family events and passing along her heritage finds to her family. Events have included a 20 Sloan member charter bus trip to Latrobe\, Pennsylvania\, Ashland County family cemetery walks\, and Family Reunions with as many as 115 in attendance. She has been very successful in managing and using Family Facebook groups to reconnect distant family members. \nSurnames she researches are Sloan\, Keefer\, Swope\, Pelton\, Hetsler and Abbott.

SUMMARY:5th Annual Pumpkin Glow
DESCRIPTION:The Ashland County Historical Society will debut the family-friendly Halloween House during the fifth annual Pumpkin Glow on Saturday\, October 21\, 2023\, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Freer Home located at 1260 Center St.  \nThis year\, guests will be asked to park their cars in the designated parking area and enjoy the display on foot. The outside of the Freer Home will be decorated as always\, featuring jack-o’-lanterns along the porches and a graveyard out front. Behind the house\, Grunt Grub will be serving up delicious food for purchase that guests can enjoy in the picnic area located next to the garage. The main attraction will be self-guided tours through the Halloween House accompanied by indoor trick-or-treating. For the first time\, both the first and second floors of the Freer Home will be decorated for Halloween in conjunction with the revamped History of Halloween tour. From jack-o’-lanterns\, pumpkins\, and black cats to ghosts\, witches\, and candy corn\, each room will have its own theme to illustrate the history of Halloween. Exhibits will also feature plenty of signage to provide guests with a fully educational experience. As visitors enjoy the home\, they can expect free handouts from local businesses and historical society volunteers to complete the night.  \nCostumes are encouraged\, but not required. Admission to the event will be $5 for adults\, and $3 for children. Cash or credit will be accepted at the door. Tickets will not be pre-sold this year.
