SUMMARY:2025 Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Join us and learn about Juneteenth – a celebration of freedom marking the official end of slavery in the United States! This event is free and open to the public. \nHappening on the grounds of the Ashland County Historical Society\, and in collaboration with Ashland Main Street\, the Ashland Public Library\, and the community’s Juneteenth Committee\, participants will engage in an immersive and community-centered event. \nWhat to expect\nParticipants will hear from historic Ashland County residents\, thanks to our living historians who will bring their experiences to life. Hear about the courageous families who helped Freedom Seekers on the Underground Railroad\, the life of a newly freedman who settled in Ashland County\, and that of Ashland Superintendent Seth Barber who enlisted in the Union Army to lead his ‘boys’ – his former students during the war. Their stories an more will be shared through these guided tour opportunities. \nTours begin at 4:15\, 5:15\, and 6:15. \nEnjoy a complimentary/free community picnic featuring BBQ (with the fixings!)\, ice cream\, cupcakes\, and more. The Ashland Public Library’s Bookmobile will be on the grounds offering books to checkout\, children’s activities and ways for even our youngest community members to enjoy. \nQuestions?\nFree parking is available onsite. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk through historic Ashland\, Ohio\, and learn about the holiday called Juneteenth. This celebration of freedom marks the official end of slavery in the United States. On Wednesday\, June 19\, 2024\, the Ashland County Historical Society\, Ashland Main Street\, and the Juneteenth Committee will be holding an evening of freedom celebration with the walking tour beginning promptly at 4:00 p.m.\, followed by ice cream and cupcakes!\nThe event starts at the Ashland County Historical Society with a tour of Ashland’s historic district as it was during the Civil War. Guests will be entertained by portrayers who will talk about the sentiment in our community at the time. Learn about Lorin Andrews\, the first person to volunteer for the Civil War\, and see his birthplace. Hear the opinions of local religious leaders and see how future presidents and other dignitaries influenced the call to war and abolition. Experience Ashland’s Courthouse Square and the stories about the statues and artifacts right on our courthouse lawn. Hear what soldiers from Ashland thought about their war experience and why freed slaves moved to Hayesville after the war.\nThe walking tour will end at the Historical Society with ice cream and cupcakes for all. In addition\, guests will be able to see actual relics from this period at the museum.\nThe event is free and open to the public. In the event of rain\, the celebration will take place at the Ashland County Historical Manor House at 414 Center Street\, Ashland\, Ohio 44805. You may call the museum at 419-289-3111 for additional information. Come and learn about Ashland like never before!
