SUMMARY:Juneteenth: Celebration of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk through historic Ashland\, Ohio\, and learn about the holiday called Juneteenth. This celebration of freedom marks the official end of slavery in the United States. On Wednesday\, June 19\, 2024\, the Ashland County Historical Society\, Ashland Main Street\, and the Juneteenth Committee will be holding an evening of freedom celebration with the walking tour beginning promptly at 4:00 p.m.\, followed by ice cream and cupcakes!\nThe event starts at the Ashland County Historical Society with a tour of Ashland’s historic district as it was during the Civil War. Guests will be entertained by portrayers who will talk about the sentiment in our community at the time. Learn about Lorin Andrews\, the first person to volunteer for the Civil War\, and see his birthplace. Hear the opinions of local religious leaders and see how future presidents and other dignitaries influenced the call to war and abolition. Experience Ashland’s Courthouse Square and the stories about the statues and artifacts right on our courthouse lawn. Hear what soldiers from Ashland thought about their war experience and why freed slaves moved to Hayesville after the war.\nThe walking tour will end at the Historical Society with ice cream and cupcakes for all. In addition\, guests will be able to see actual relics from this period at the museum.\nThe event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us at the Freer Home as we welcome John Anderson who will give a first-person portrayal of Louis Bromfield. \nLiterature comes to life in the performances and scholarship of John Dennis Anderson\, an accomplished oral interpreter who presents biographical performances of America’s greatest authors. As a Professor Emeritus at Emerson College\, Anderson has taught and continues to publish in the academic field of performance studies and serves as a consultant on living history performance. Since 1994\, Anderson has been developing and presenting living history (or Chautauqua) performances as the authors Henry James\, William Faulkner\, Robert Frost\, Washington Irving\, Ernest Hemingway\, Louis Bromfield\, Henry Beston\, and Lynn Riggs. He has performed in over a dozen states\, in venues from the Boston Athenaeum to the Seattle Public Library. No stranger to Ashland\, Anderson has performed several of these characters at the annual Ashland Chautauqua event at the Myers Memorial Band Shell.

DESCRIPTION:Tammy Sloan Pelton\, a member and past President of the Ashland County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society\, is an enthusiastic genealogist that enjoys teaching others how to get started preserving your family heritage. She also has some great tips on how to preserve those family heirlooms. \nTammy was born and raised in Ashland\, Ohio. She and husband Kevin raised their three daughters in the northern part of Ashland County in the Mapleton School District where she served on many committees and boards\, including six years with the Mapleton School Board. \nIn 2017\, her interest in genealogy began. Her passion is creating special family events and passing along her heritage finds to her family. Events have included a 20 Sloan member charter bus trip to Latrobe\, Pennsylvania\, Ashland County family cemetery walks\, and Family Reunions with as many as 115 in attendance. She has been very successful in managing and using Family Facebook groups to reconnect distant family members. \nSurnames she researches are Sloan\, Keefer\, Swope\, Pelton\, Hetsler and Abbott.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series - Steve McQuillin at the Vermillion Institute
DESCRIPTION:Steve McQuillin is a preservation consultant with degrees from Oberlin College and Columbia University. He grew up in Elyria and worked for the Ohio Historic Preservation Office before becoming a consultant 40 years ago. He works to obtain federal and state funding for historic building projects throughout the Midwest. He purchased and rehabilitated the Vermillion Institute 13 years ago and it serves as his home and office. Its former chapel is a large meeting space.   Steve also owns historic properties in Hayesville and Mansfield.
